Privacy policy

What we hold, where it goes, and how to get rid of it.

GreenAI runs chat.greenai.org.uk and this site, and decides how the data described here is used. Questions, deletion requests or complaints: privacy@greenai.org.uk.

Training data

  • Your data. We don't train on your data. Everything you say on GreenAI is between you and the model.
  • Feedback. The only exception is if you've provided feedback (i.e. given us a thumbs up or down on a specific conversation) for us to review and make subsequent responses better.

What we store

  • Your account. Name, email address, a hashed password (we never see the original), and whether the address has been verified.
  • Your conversations. The messages you send and the replies you get, stored so they're there when you come back. Titles are generated from the first message.
  • Feedback. If you use the thumbs on a reply, we store the rating, the reason you picked and any note you type, against that message.
  • Usage and credits. Token credits spent and granted, so the free allowance and any subscription add up correctly.
  • Payments. If you subscribe, your Stripe customer and subscription IDs and what tier you're on. Card details go to Stripe, never to us.
  • Server logs. Ordinary web-server records, kept short-term for debugging and abuse.

There are no advertising or analytics trackers on either site.

Where your messages go

When you send a message, it goes to our router, which decides which model to use (a light weight one for text and a more capable multi-modal model for images).

If you switch web search on, the search terms for that message go to our search provider.

Who else touches your data

  • Hetzner - supply the various servers we use.
  • Stripe - subscriptions and card payments.
  • Resend - the verification and password-reset emails.
  • Cloudflare - DNS for greenai.org.uk and forwarding for our @greenai.org.uk addresses.

Cookies and what's stored in your browser

A sign-in cookie keeps you logged in - a short-lived access token (15 minutes) refreshed by a longer one (7 days). It is what makes the site work; there are no advertising cookies to consent to.

Your browser also keeps small preferences locally, such as whether web search is on for a conversation and your default fork option. Clearing site data removes them.

How long we keep things, and how to delete them

  • A conversation - until you delete it. Deleting it in the chat removes its messages.
  • Your account - until you delete it, in Settings → Account. That takes the account and its conversations with it.
  • Payment records - subscription and invoice records are kept as long as tax and accounting rules require, even after an account goes.

Anything you can't do from the app, email privacy@greenai.org.uk and we'll do it.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, ask us to restrict or stop using it, and ask for it in a portable form. We handle your data to provide the service you asked for, and to meet our legal obligations on payments.

Write to privacy@greenai.org.uk. If we get it wrong, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Children

GreenAI isn't intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly keep accounts for them. If one has been created, tell us and we'll remove it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters - new processors, a different retention rule - we'll update the date at the top and, for anything significant, say so in the app. Continuing to use GreenAI after that means the new version applies.
